Sermon – “Did Christ Preach to Spirits in Hell?” – Garner Ted Armstrong Sermon, February 16, 2002

The Catholic Church, deep in their doctrine, teach that Christ was not dead at all after “dying” on the stake (Gr. stauros). Rather He was spending His two nights and one day between Friday afternoon and Sunday morning preaching to “spirits in hell”.

Well, as an aside Christ did not die on a Friday afternoon but a Wednesday and he rose not on a Sunday morning but the previous day, late on a Sabbath afternoon. Three days and three nights, just as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish, Christ having plainly stated that the sign of Jonah would be the only enduring sign that Christ was Who He said He was.

Christ did preach to demonic spirits at one time. 1 Peter 3:18-20 tells us when and why.
18For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 19By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

That occurred back in the days of Noah, as stated. No other time is recorded and certainly it has nothing to do with Christ’s death on the stake and His resurrection. He was DEAD for the three days and three nights, as He said He would be. All of the relevant scriptures are covered in this fascinating sermon.
