Sermon – “Church Eras”-Garner Ted Armstrong Sermon, April 24, 1995

Some still believe that the 7 churches of the Book of Revelation, Ch. 1-3 really represent seven eras of God’s Church. The theory is that each of the characteristics ascribed to each of the seven churches dominated the “era” in history that accorded with that church. To adherents of the theory the fact that all seven churches existed at the one time in the 1st Century is no cause for caution in belief. The fact that each message to an individual church is then expressed as a message to all the named churches seems to be ignored. For example, at the end of the message to the Laodicean church Revelation 3:22 says: “He That hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches.” In other words, each message, though highlighting a failure or attribute of each of the churches, applies the messages to all. Plain enough one might have thought. And we can all think of individuals within congregations, perhaps ourselves, that suffer or benefit from one or multiple of the characters ascribed to the churches.
